There are two types of concrete staining, acid stain and water based acrylic stain. Acid stain is reactive coloring process that react differently to different parts of the concrete. It penetrates into the concrete, and there is no guarantee as to the exact color turn out. The acid chemically reacts different to each piece of concrete.

Water based acrylic stains have many more color options and can be used inside or outside. It is a nonreactive color option and will only penetrate into the concrete when the pores of the concrete are opened. It requires a thorough cleaning and prep work of the concrete. Water based acrylic stain is not as durable in exterior applications as acid staining, but offers more color options. It is also important to use a good sealer and remember to implement a re-sealer maintenance plan.
